Years ago I framed a postcard that says on the back, “Cigarette by Areel.” I assumed the painting was in some museum, but a google search for “Areel” turns up nothing. The card is an “Art Nouveau and Turn-of-the-Century Posters in miniature by Sandy Val, New York.” My taste runs to realism, in art and fiction, but this cartoonish woman has a tale to tell.
